Graz, Austria 18 August 2011  The Austrian EFKON Group headquartered in Graz/Raaba, one of the worldwide leading companies in intelligent transportation and tolling solutions, has announced that its subsidiary Tollink South Africa has received an additional major order for the supply and maintenance of the toll plazas on the N1 North Toll Road in South Africa. The complete € 60 million South African National Roads Agency Limited SANRAL contract was won by Tolcon-Lehumo as the operator. EFKON subsidiary Tollink is the preferred service provider for the maintenance component of the contract, which is valued at around € 11 million (ZAR 110 million). The contract spans eight years and includes the full upgrade of the N1 North route (57 lanes) toll plazas as well as the maintenance and support of the system. The project started in June 2011 and the operation service period is scheduled to end on 30 June 2019. The system provided by the EFKON Group member will enable the operator to effectively manage traffic, finance the operation and handle toll collection and control at the various toll plazas.

“This further major order in South Africa shows us that our innovative toll plaza systems are well-positioned in the market. This puts another fresh wind in our sails for the ongoing business year, which we currently expect to finish extremely successfully in our African markets. Additional projects of interest are already in the pipeline and will be announced soon,” says Dr. Raimund Pammer, CTO EFKON AG.

The declared N1 North Toll Road spans the entire Northern Province (Limpopo), between Gauteng Province and Zimbabwe, a distance of approximately 377 km, comprising four toll plazas. The company will take over all employer facilities and maintain these assets for the duration of the contract period. Furthermore, EFKON subsidiary Tollink will install a Digital Video Surveillance System (DVSS) which recognizes queues at an early stage and initiate necessary measures to optimize traffic flow. The company will also install a communication medium to the plazas for the DVSS to be able to communicate with the system from a remote site.
