EFKON Asia, the Kuala Lumpur based subsidiary of EFKON AG, Austria has received an additional order to manufacture another 250.000 Multi Lane Free Flow On Board Units (two piece OBU with integrated contactless Mifare Smart Card) based on high speed bi-directional active ISO CALM compatible Infrared for IRAT (Infrared Advanced Technology SDN BHD) a member of the United Engineers Malaysia Group an Asian giant in construction.

Graz, Austria, 9 February 2010   EFKON introduced its Infrared Technology to Malaysia in 1999 and has replaced all earlier Electronic Toll Collection Systems, primarily microwave systems based, nationwide in 2004. More than 1.2 million EFKON produced On Board Units (OBU) have been in the field at the end of 2009, delivering a total of 9 million Euros of order entries from Malaysia in recent months.

With the bustling Malaysian economy re-energized and growing, the demand for the convenience delivered by EFKON's Two Piece Tag OBU is increasingly on the rise. Consequently IRAT will supply another quarter of a million more EFKON manufactured On Board Units to distributors in the country.

In Malaysia, a single multi-application smart card pays for tolls, parking, bus and rail transport. The EFKON produced On Board Unit enables a unique experience of multi modal travel drawing on its combined features of a Smart Card enabled On Board Unit. It provides premium road and parking access today and will improve travel time and make travel even smoother when truly exploited by Open Road Tolling.

The SmartTag System is based on EFKON's Infrared Electronic Toll Collection System and is designed to operate in a Multi Lane Free Flow environment, but can be used in a Single Lane high speed Free Flow with barrier, as operated in Malaysia. It is therefore quite easy to extend to the Multi Lane Free Flow mode by adding the Enforcement and Classification System to it.
