A GNSS/CN on-board unit (OBU) uses an autonomous positioning system such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate itself within a charge area or network. The on-board unit will contain the appropriate charge structure as well as information concerning when the vehicle should be charged. The OBU establishes a communication through a cellular network to the Back Office for transmitting the collected toll charges and receiving updates of operational data. For enforcement purposes, the OBU supports a short range communication via microwave or Infrared.
Mobility On-Board-Unit
EFKONs Mobility On-Board-Unit is designed for the transmission of position related information from the OBU to the back-office system for fleet or device tracking purposes.
The OBU is simply mounted behind any vehicle’s windscreen to provide the optimal environment for the reception of positioning signals of GPS satellites. Using its 20-channel high-sensitivity GPS receiver and internal antenna the OBU autonomously determines its position every second. The OBU processes the calculated position and forwards the position information via GSM/GPRS communication to the pre-defined back-office system.
Key Features
- High-capacity GPS (accuracy better than 2.1m, fix every second)
- Manipulation and fraud detection
- No user interaction required
- Connected to vehicle ignition for effective power management
- Easy mounting with Velco strips
- Simply personalisation via web client
Satellite OBU
The EFKON On-Board Unit ST OBU 6 collects and processes all information on toll road use required for a modern Electronic Toll Collection system according to the European Directive 2004/52/EC. Using its high-sensitivity GPS receiver and internal antenna the OBU autonomously determines its position every second. Raw trip data can either be transmitted to the back-office using the GPRS/SMS communication channel (thin client functionality) or can be processed further in the OBU in order to detect toll road use and create associated rated toll transactions (thick client functionality).
A selection of dedicated short range communication (DSRC) modules gives a variety of further options for enforcement / compliance checking and communication with optional road side-equipment. The ST OBU 6 is well prepared for interoperability and for future applications beyond tolling.
