The EFKON OBU is a device that performs transactions at the EFKON transceiver using most advanced infrared technology with special ALNRS (Ambient Light Noise Reduction System). The OBU has a CSC (Contactless Smart Card) interface to be used together with contact-less smart cards and is mounted in a vehicle behind a windscreen.

ISO CALM-based Active Infrared as Communication Technology
To create a powerful and standardized solution the ISO CALM concept (Communication Access for Land Mobile) was introduced. ISO CALM is a family of international Standards (ISO 2121x) which shares a common architecture, common network protocols and air interface definitions for wireless communications. ISO CALM supports multiple media, like 2nd and 3rd Generation Cellular, 5.9 GHz Active Microwave and Active Infrared communications.

• EFKON standard OBU for using contactless smart cards in pre-paid systems. 
• EFKON OBU for using smart cards with contacts in pre-paid systems.
• EFKON on board module which is provided with a CAN bus interface. Data is sent to the OBM via CAN bus. It can store up to 333 bytes of information which can be transmitted via IR data communication. It has no CSC support.

EFKON OBU Light

EFKONs latest On-Board-Unit Light (IS® OBU L40) is designed for active infrared communication in automatic electronic payment solutions (e.g. electronic toll collection in single lane or multi lane systems), for registration or identification purposes. It is simply mounted behind a vehicle’s windscreen to automatically carry out transactions as soon as it enters the communication zone of the transceiver without any need for user operation. It is supplied with a mounting socket to easily install it in any vehicle. The memory reserved for user data is protected with mulitple secuity features. Features are the individual setting of vehicle classes, easy exchange of the battery, buzzer notification for information and warning purposes and the ergonomic design.

The IS® OBU L40 uses State of the Art technology with improved immunity to external sources due to reduction of unwanted Wake Up and advanced Transaction Access security scheme. Personalisation, initialisation, configuration and balance reloading can be performed with EFKON’s Programming Unit (PU 400). Uniqueness and authenticity of the On Board Unit is guaranteed due to the programming of an explicit serial number and OBU identifier as well as a secure OBU certificate during the production and initialisation process.


EFKON Contact-less Smart Card (CSC)

The EFKON CSC is a contact-less smart card that complies with standard ISO14443-A.The CSC does not depend on any internal power supply but is externally supplied by the CSC reading device via a contact-less inductive RF interface.
