In order to increase road safety over a pre-defined section, EFKON has developed the Section Control System, which can enforce every speed between entry and exit point. It monitors a longer stretch of road, thereby encouraging drivers to keep speed moderate and drive smoothly.
Thus increasing the traffic throughput. Ghost-drivers (driving in the wrong direction on a highway) are also detected. The system can be set up on highway sections, rural roads, and city roads, in tunnels and also for temporary construction sites. Vehicles are classified on entry of the section and an image of the license plate is taken together with a time stamp. On leaving the monitored section, the same is repeated and images are compared in order to determine average section speed. Optionally speed limit information, based on weather conditions and classification can be displayed via VMS (Variable Message Sign) to vehicles so drivers can be notified.
EFKON’s average speed control system (Section Control) consists of one or more entry and exit gates and is capable of operating in speeds up to 250 km/h. The single or dual gantry solution may provide front- or back-shot images and fully works in a Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) environment. The system allows prior registered exempt-users (ambulance, fire brigade, etc.) to pass un-enforced. An efficient database may carry such vehicles in a white-list.
The general software and hardware design is based on a unique modular concept which allows easy scalability to cover highways from 2 lanes up to 6 lanes in one direction including hard-shoulder.
Typically the front-end components are installed on a gantry on an open highway. But it also makes sense to install the road side sensors on existing infrastructure like tunnel ceilings or bridges.
