Successful Toll Operations in Ireland by EFKON

EFKON commenced operations in Ireland on 2 October 2006. EFKON operates the toll plazas on the Fermoy bypass in Cork on behalf of Direct Route (Fermoy) Ltd. Direct Route (Fermoy) Ltd is responsible for the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Fermoy bypass for the 30 year period of the contract. Direct Route completed the Fermoy bypass on October 2006 in partnership with the NRA. The project was delivered on budget eight months ahead of schedule. Toll Operations have been sub contracted to The Intolligent Ltd. a 100% subsidiary of EFKON AG. This involves the day to day running and maintenance of the toll plaza, the recruitment and retention of staff, and all reporting and feedback that goes with the management of the business.

The largest project to be undertaken outside of the Dublin Area since the late 1920s, the Limerick Tunnel scheme is one of the Governments flagship projects for the Transport 21 plan. EFKON also operates two toll collection locations in Limerick, one ten lane and one six lane plaza. Both plazas will be manned and it is estimated that the two plazas will handle the traffic and employ up to 60 people. For a swift traffic transaction, EFKON will use the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) technology for this project. Start of operations at the plazas is planned for June 2010. The Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITS) will be designed, developed and installed by the EFKON and includes Incident Detection, Over-height Vehicle Detection and Guidance, Variable Message Signage Portal Control Function and Lane Control Function, to name but a few.

Training Program

We have devised a comprehensive training program for various personnel, right from toll plaza operators to administration managers. Personal training is provided on operational as well as managerial level. To facilitate the training process, an operator manual is provided for quick and ready reference. Through the training program, we endeavor to create a close link between the operator's procedures and the system and provide a clear understanding of the sequence of events on the system. The training has been divided into five groups, namely toll collectors, POS operators, supervisors, plaza admin & management and technical (hardware and software). We also offer real-time training on request. Efkon resource can be made available for real-time training on cash-ups, administration and reporting as well as to assist with any queries or clarifications.
