If throughput is to be maximized in existing toll facilities, a video based enforcement system may be used to eliminate the barrier. Barriers psychologically slow down vehicles to typically 20 km/h while maximum throughput is achieved at about 55 km/h due to a trade-off between speed and safety distance between vehicles.
