If throughput is to be maximized in existing toll facilities, a video based enforcement system may be used to eliminate the barrier. Barriers psychologically slow down vehicles to typically 20 km/h while maximum throughput is achieved at about 55 km/h due to a trade-off between speed and safety distance between vehicles.

EFKON offers video tolling and enforcement subsystems for System Integrators and turn-key solutions. In this operations mode, there is no barrier used for enforcement. Instead, there is a video based enforcement detection system which detects and keeps court-proof records of violations.
Toll patrons save time and enjoy improved convenience. There is no stopping required, and there is no barrier.
An important aspect is that the corresponding violation processing is only effective if most road users are within the same jurisdiction as the toll road. Payment can be pre-paid, post-paid, on-tag or reside in the back-end.
The system consists of:

Classification, which includes vehicle detection / height or profile based classification / begin-end vehicle detection / trailer detection / axle counting / vehicle direction.

Optional OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for fully automatic license plate reading.

Nearly 100% performance for entire system (OCR Reference: All license plates which would be readable by human eye).

Highest throughput is possible as the system accepts a vehicle at highway speeds with a read as fast as every 40 milliseconds.
