Every vehicle participating in the scheme is equipped with a bi-directional communication device. As vehicles approach (from front or rear, across lanes or on the other side of the road), a communication link is established within microseconds and information is exchanged via an invisible active infrared light beam.
The “ad-hoc network”can be used to generate information about the traffic situation far ahead of a vehicle, to exchange information about acceleration or deceleration, to exchange voice or other data or to disseminate information that was received via other channels to surrounding vehicles.
A first generation of such devices was demonstrated recently based on the active infrared communication used for enforcement within the German Truck Tolling Scheme. All 1,000,000 OBUs will have the capability to participate in such a scheme. Remote software updatesare possible at any time.
The devices in use may also be placed in private passenger cars. All communication used is according to the new ISO TC 204 CALM documents which are currently defined to establish a universal communication standardfor cellular, infrared and microwave communication.
