Road safety and sustainable mobility require features in communication that
simply did not exist until today. With signifi cant effort, ISO TC 204 has
produced a set of automotive communication standards named “CALM” (Continuous
Air interface for Long and Medium range), which are currently being completed to
enable international and universal interoperability of telematics systems.
CALM offers:
- Universal access through complementary media M5 (5.8/5.9 GHz), Active
Infrared, MillimetreWave and GSM/UMTS.
- Use of modern Internet protocols, adaptation layers and management entities.
- ”Best” use (optimum selection and utilization) of media according to user-
and application specific criteria (e.g. costs).
- Inter-operability and seamless handover between media and applications.
- The general purpose short, medium and long range communication between
vehicles and the roadside, from vehicle to vehicle, and between mobile equipment
and fixed infrastructure points.
Applications include road safety, traffic management, monitoring and
enforcement in mobile situations, route guidance, onboard web access, financial
transactions and infotainment. The CALM IR standard (ISO 21214) for active
infrared has successfully been completed and is fully implemented in an ASIC
designed by EFKON.
