Proper enforcement of speed limits is one of the most important contributions to traffic safety. The typical way to do this is by installation of speed traps in particular places. The disadvantage of speed traps is that their effect is limited to a short stretch of road and the impact on people’s behaviour is low. Many times speed traps are even dangerous due to braking before and after the trap.
EFKON’s Section Speed Control Systems monitor a longer stretch of road, thereby encouraging drivers to keep speed moderate and drive smoothly. Safety is improved, and at the same time traffic throughput is typically increased. Ghost-drivers (driving in the wrong direction on a highway) are also detected. The system can be set up on highway sections (up to 6 lanes multi-lane free flow), rural roads, and city roads, in tunnels and also for temporary construction sites.
There is also the option to transmit speed information to vehicles so drivers can be notified.
Vehicles are classified on entry of the section and an image of the license plate is taken together with a time stamp. On leaving the monitored section, the same is repeated and images are compared in order to determine average section speed.
Classification is achieved vie EFKON’s TOM 2000 laser scanner which produces a three-dimensional profile of every vehicle. Images are taken by means of a digital camera and an invisible infrared flash. The computer reads images automatically and timestamps compared to determine travel time, and, hence, average speed. The system works under all weather and lighting conditions.
EFKON’s Section Speed Control Systems fulfils requirements with regard to privacy regulations and has all required legal approvals for court proof evidence.
